Ready for some spooky fun and crisp leaves? Fall is the perfect time of year to get outside and explore nature in a new way. After all, what’s more fun than hiking through a forest while it’s falling leaves? We have three fun fall activities that you can drive to from Hilo, HI.

3 Fun Fall Activities You Can Drive to From Hilo, HI

Wailuku River State Park

Wailuku River State Park is a spacious park near Hilo that’s perfect for picnics, swimming, and hiking. The park offers two trails: the 0.5-mile Wailuku Trail and the 1.5-mile Maka’eo Gulch Trail.
The Wailuku Trail is an easy hike with plenty of shade and a waterfall at the end of it. The Maka’eo Gulch Trail is a bit more challenging but still manageable for most hikers. The park also has a picnic area and restrooms. You’ll have to pay a $5 entrance fee to visit the park, but it’s well worth it for the beautiful scenery and cool waterfalls!

Kaumana Caves

In the heart of Hilo, Kaumana Caves is an easy drive from anywhere in the city. The caves are wet, dark, and claustrophobic, but for those who are brave enough to venture in, it’s well worth the trip. This cave system is home to a variety of native plants and wildlife, including endangered birds like the Hawaii Creeper (a type of honeycreeper) and the Hawaiian Hoary Bat (the only native mammal).
Visitors can walk through some of the caves on their own, while others require guided tours. In addition to being fun activities to do with kids, these three places are also great ways to learn more about Hilo’s unique geology and history.

Leleiwi Beach Park

Leleiwi Beach Park is a great place for families to spend the day. There’s plenty of parking, and it’s easy to find. The park is located on Highway 132, 10 minutes north of downtown Hilo. It offers good swimming conditions, tide pools, and snorkeling opportunities. The waves are usually gentle enough for kids to play in safely.
The park has restrooms, picnic tables, BBQ pits, and pavilions available for rent at no charge. There’s also a variety of food vendors selling their wares near the beach entrance. You can even find a few places selling snacks like chips and candy bars if you need a quick pick-me-up while enjoying this beautiful beach.
