Hilo, HI, is one of the most beautiful places in Hawaii. It overlooks Hilo Bay and has amazing views of two shield volcanos. Our settlement also has some of the most amazing beaches on Hawai’i Island. Whether you live here or you’re visiting, we’d like to tell you about some of the best beaches you have to experience when you’re here

3 of the Best Beaches You Can Drive to From Hilo, HI

Richardson Beach

Just east of Hilo lies the beautiful Richardson Beach. It’s noted as the only beach in the area with green and black sand. Access to the water is limited in some parts of the beach, but you can certainly find your way into the pristine waters. This beach is also known for the large number of sea turtles that gather here. You can even occasionally see monk seals doing their own sunbathing on the sands.
The beach has a rustic and untouched feel, which makes it a perfect place to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The area is well known for its great snorkeling opportunities, and kids enjoy climbing and exploring the lava rocks. The beach has outdoor showers available and places to wash the sand off your feet. The beach is located at 2279 Kalanianaole Ave, Hilo.

Honoli’i Beach Park

This beach is two miles from Hilo and is covered with fine black-gray sand. This beach is an excellent spot to surf or watch professional surfers ride the waves. Swimming is not a usual pastime here as the currents can be unpredictable, and the water has a rocky bottom. To access the beach, you need to park and then take the stairs down to the beach level.
For the nature lover, you can often spot sea turtles on the beach. While swimming is more challenging here, fishing is very popular as the rocks attract numerous fish. A lifeguard is on duty during the day, and the beach has restrooms and showers available. The beach entrance is located at 180 Kahoa Street, Hilo.

Reeds Bay Beach Park

Swimming and stand-up paddleboarding are popular activities here, together with picnicking and just lying on the sand and soaking up the sun’s rays. Picnic tables are placed near the sand, and showers and restrooms are available and marked.
Trees provide welcome shade when you want to temporarily escape the sun, and facilities are available for barbecues. Reed’s Bay can be found at 251 Banyan Drive, Hilo.
These are just a few of the beaches in easy reach with your 2022 Honda Passport. Its five seating capacity and 41.2 cubic feet of storage give you space for the whole family, picnic items, and everything else needed for a great day on the beach.
