Living in Hilo, HI has many perks, but one of the best is the close access you have to so many great state parks. Set on the Big Island, this tropical area boasts dense rainforests, active volcanoes, and serene beaches, making this one of the best places in the US for nature walks. Whether you’re taking the family out for a camping trip or simply fancy a good solo hike, here are some of our favorite places you should check out.

Kaumana Caves State Park

Formed naturally from the lava flows of Mauna Loa, Kaumana Caves are a treat for all the senses. These twisting tunnels descend down more than 25 miles to depths unfathomable, but sadly all of the caves cannot be explored as they venture into private property. However, the area surrounding the mouth of the cave is beautiful too, and well worth the trip.

Kaumana Caves State Park is only a short drive away from Hilo, however, the roads around the area leave much to be desired, so make sure you take the journey in a sturdy 4WD car such as the new Honda CRV to avoid having any difficulties on the road.

Wailuku River State Park

With its 80-foot drop that produces an incredible rainbow-colored mist, the Waianuenue waterfalls are some of the most famous in the state, and these are found right here in Wailuku River State Park. There is also a cave hidden behind the waterfall that – according to legends – was the home of Hina; the mother of a demigod known as Maui.

Other popular attractions in this park include the “Boiling Pots,” pools of water that are connected by underground flows and that bubble constantly as if they are boiling, giving this area an otherworldly feeling.

Lapakahi Historical State Park

Head to the north of the Big Island and find this historical gem. Ruins of an old Hawaiian fishing village dating back hundreds of years are scattered around the park, giving an insight into how these Polynesian islanders lived in the pre-Columbian era, and there are also some pretty beaches in the surrounding area too.

With all these beautiful spots just a short drive away, there’s no excuse why you aren’t spending more time in nature. Whether you’re interested in the historical ruins of Lapakahi Historical State Park or the labyrinth of caves at Kaumana Caves State Park, all these places are sure to make a great day out.
