The museum is situated right next to the ocean, surrounded by the buildings that survived the disaster.
There are many interesting displays at the museum, with information about tsunamis that have taken place all around the world. The video presentation featuring interviews with tsunami survivors is very moving. The museum guides are knowledgeable and friendly and will happily answer any questions you may have. Lyman Museum
The Lyman Museum is a natural history museum that was founded in 1931. It has a wealth of exhibits showcasing Hawaii’s history, culture, and natural beauty. The first floor has a beautiful collection of minerals and shells that help to tell the story of the geological creation of Hawaii. We particularly like the second floor, which has a series of displays about the culture and history of the island’s people.
If you have the time, it is well worth taking the guided tour, which is both entertaining and informative. There is also an excellent gift shop with books, music, and crafts that will delight any Hawaii lover. The audio and video presentations use modern technology to bring the history of Hawaii to life. Mokupapapa Discovery Center
The Mokupapapa Discovery Center is dedicated to teaching visitors about the National Marine Monument, and the Northwestern Hawaiian islands. Our favorite part of the center is the 3,500-gallon saltwater aquarium, featuring an amazing variety of tropical fish. There is a wealth of information here about Hawaiian sea life and reefs.
The center has sculptures made from plastic that were discarded in the sea, highlighting the conservation efforts that the center makes. For the kids, there are several enjoyable interactive activities to enjoy, including a robotics area. The center is free of charge to visit, but donations are welcome. The Mokupapapa Discovery Center is located at 76 Kamehameha Ave.
