The small town of Hilo, HI is known as being one of the most beautiful places in the world. Located on the rainy side of the island, this place is full of luscious greenery that is incredible to explore during the summer months. If you find yourself in Hilo during the summer, here are some fun summertime activities we think you will enjoy.

Take the Car and Check Out These 3 Fun Summertime Activities Near Hilo, HI

1. Snorkeling at Richardson Ocean Park

Richardson’s is the closest black sand beach you’ll find in Hilo. If you take a close look at the black sand on the beach, you’ll be shocked to find green sand as well. Green sand is a rare phenomenon that can only be seen in three other places in the world! With tide pools, calm waters, and picnic tables, this is a perfect place to spend a hot summer’s day.
The shallow waters of Richardson offer great snorkeling for people of all ages. It is not uncommon to come across a Hawaiian monk seal or Hawaiian green sea turtle in this area. Both of these species are endangered, so if you come into contact with either of these animals, make sure to keep your distance and remain respectful.

2. Explore Rainbow Falls

Rainbow Falls is a large waterfall located right in Hilo town! It is said that this sacred waterfall is home to the Hawaiian goddess of the moon, Hina. The reason why this place gets its name is that the refraction of light on the water droplets of the waterfall often casts a rainbow that can be seen if you stand far away. While this is not always the case, you are much more likely to catch this phenomenon if you visit early in the morning.

3. Venture Through Kaumana Caves

Created by an 1881 lava flow from Mauna Loa, this long lava tube extends 25 miles underground. From the entrance, you’ll walk down a small yellow staircase into a jungle of tropical plants. It will feel like you are at the wrong place at first, but we assure you to just keep walking. You’ll eventually be led to a fork where you’ll have two options to explore.
The left tube has a smaller opening and is the less traveled tube. The right tube is much larger. This section of the tube provides almost two miles of public underground tunnel to explore. The terrain is extremely rocky and slippery, so if you are exploring, we recommend wearing proper footwear. This hike is extremely dark and should not be attempted without a reliable source of light.
With these three activities in Hilo, you’ll have the summer of a lifetime! While you’re exploring the outdoors, remember to always treat the environment with respect.
