Engine problems can develop over time, even in a Honda. They occur due to worn or damaged parts and are most prevalent in cars that aren’t routinely serviced. They range from minor to major, but even a small problem can lead to long-term damage if it’s not repaired by your Honda dealer. These are some of the problems our Honda-trained technicians can repair for you.

3 Engine Problems You Should Always Fix at Your Honda Dealer

Timing Chain Problems

The timing chain is a chain that connects the camshaft at the top of your engine with the crankshaft at the bottom of your engine. The chain moves at a set speed, and this ensures that your engine valves open and close at the correct times. Correct timing is essential, as your engine needs to receive fuel and vent exhaust gases at precisely timed intervals.
A timing chain will usually work effectively for at least 100,000 miles and will then need replacement. The belt operates in the hot environment of your engine, and this can eventually lead to wear or metal fatigue. If your timing chain is damaged, you may experience misfiring, hear a rattling sound from the engine, or the check engine light will illuminate. We’ll examine the chain, and we can easily replace it to fix this problem.

Damaged Engine Mounts

Your engine is securely attached to your car’s frame. This prevents engine movements caused by combustion and hundreds of fast-moving parts from damaging the engine or your car. The engine must also be protected from movement as you drive. The engine mounts are made from tough rubber, and they’re liquid-filled to absorb movement and dissipate it.
We check the condition of your engine mounts during your regular services. Even the high-quality rubber of the mounts can be damaged by the engine heat, and this makes them less elastic. A damaged mount can crack and the liquid will escape. If this happens, you’ll experience thudding sensations as you drive. Our technicians will check the mounts, and we can replace them if necessary.

Damaged Alternator

An alternator’s job is to produce electricity for your car’s systems and devices. It’s powered by the crankshaft’s movement and works continuously while your engine is on to produce power. On average, an alternator will work for eight years before it wears out and needs to be replaced. Since the alternator generates all your car’s electricity, a worn or damaged alternator can cause major problems.
A damaged or worn alternator produces less power than it should, and this can result in engine misfiring due to lack of power, dim headlights, and a drained battery. We can test the alternator and fit a new one if required.

Most problems with an engine can be easily fixed if they’re identified as soon as they appear. Call our service department today at Tony Honda Hilo.
